About Your Spine

Patient Education

The spine is a large organ that stretches from the base of the skull (occiput) to the pelvis. Most disorders of the spine occur in the neck (cervical spine) and in the low back (lumbar spine). The reason for this is that these areas are the most flexible and account for the vast majority of motion in the spine. While the middle portion of the spine (the thoracic spine) is stabilized by the rib cage and allows relatively little motion, the cervical and lumbar areas are most prone to “break down” over time.
